Fishing on Long Island
With at least 80 miles of coast line on each side, Long Island has many opportunities for flats fishing. The western side of the island (leeward) contains many protected bays, flats, and channels that provide the perfect habitat for great bonefishing. The eastern side borders a deeper atlantic, but there are still many flats that are accessible to the wandering angler.
The flats out of Deadmans cay are very clean and full of bonefish. The flats
near Galloway are actually in an area that once was a salt production facility, then a redfish hatchery, then a shrimp farm. Now, baby tarpon and bonefish cruise the flats and channels.
If you like exploring on your own, there are miles of flats and lagoons to check out.
Long Island is a paradise for the do-it-yourself bonefisherman. However, there are some great local guides who will cut your learning time down...we can arrange their services for you. They will pick you up at the hotel and provide a great day on the flats. For off-shore fishermen, we can arrange for local guides to take you out for sailfish, tuna, wahoo, dorado, and many other species depending on the time of the year.
Bonefishing is good all year round because Long Island is located far enough South and thus usually avoids the cold winter storms from the north.
